Even before the time when Texas Hold’em was deemed the most favored variant of poker, Five Card Draw Poker was the choice of most of the people.  The reason behind its popularity in the past and till today can be attributed to its simple game play and rules.  Five Card Draw poker is played by using a standard card deck.  This game is generally available on online casino or poker sites but rarely in land based casinos.

As the name suggests this is a variant of draw poker which means that players are provided with a choice of discarding some or all of the five cards of the hand dealt to them.  The motive behind this game is to create a best five card hand by discarding and receiving their replacement from the dealer.   Whenever cards are dealt, the deck gets shuffled.

Blinds in Five Card Draw Poker

Just like all the flop based games, Five Card draw poker also features blinds.   The blinds can be described as forced bets made by the player sitting on the left side of the dealer.  There are two types of blinds commonly called small blind and big blind.  The small blind is made by the player sitting next to the dealer (on the left side).  The big blind is posted by the player sitting on the left side of the player who posts the small blind.

When a player starts playing the Five Card Draw poker, an option to wait for the big blind to reach his or her position is provided except for the case when you are sitting on the left side of the dealer or in the small blind seat.  The other person who can skip the big blind is the dealer himself.

Game Play of Five Card Draw Poker

Once all the blinds are there, the dealer starts dealing the hand.  Five faced down cards are dealt to each player starting from the player sitting on the left side of the dealer.  When all the players have their five cards, the first round of betting gets started.  Betting starts from the player sitting on the left side of the dealer.   All of the players are provided with the option of folding, call or raise their bets.  In case no player raises the bet, the player who posted big blind can check the hands of other players.

The amount of bet posted by the players depends upon the variant of Five Card Draw they are playing.   In No Limit game the player has the option to bet all his chips.  In Pot Limit the player has the option to bet up to the size of the pot.  In Fixed Limit the players can bet in parts as per the predetermined betting limit depending upon the size of blinds.
